Contact 2 Helps Local Entrepreneur Settle Rebate Tiff With Home Depot

BALLWIN, Mo. – Kathy Becker is hard at work running her deftly dubbed business, “Crafted By Kathy.” Her holiday-themed handiwork has her at the hardware store nearly every day.

Becker frequently visits Home Depot for her supplies. She says her “pro” membership and the 11-percent rebates available on qualifying purchases have helped her save money and keep business booming.

“Didn’t have a problem in the beginning,” Becker said. “We would submit the receipts. Didn’t have a problem. We would get the rebates back pretty quick.”

She says over the last several months, it has become increasingly difficult to get her rebates processed. She contacted Home Depot and Blackhawk Network. Home Depot partners with the Blackhawk Network to administer its rebate program.

“Recently, they would tell me you should have all of your rebates in 72 hours. It’s been three weeks,” Becker said.

She showed FOX 2’s Contact 2 team records she had kept, detailing purchase dates, tracking numbers, and dollar amounts. She says she is still owed more than $1,300 in rebates.

“If someone from Home Depot or someone from Blackhawk Engagements wants to come in and go through my receipts, they are more than welcome,” she said. “Those boxes are in there. I don’t think enough is being done.”

Becker got some exciting news in less than a week after FOX 2 contacted Home Depot and Blackhawk.

“They sent me a $1,300 gift card and apologized profusely for the runaround I’ve gotten,” she said.

A spokesperson from Home Depot said the following statement:

“Ms. Becker’s experience isn’t what we want our customers to have. We’re happy we were able to resolve this issue for Ms. Becker.”

Reinvigorated by her rebates, Becker’s got the money and motivation to move forward with her orders.

“I thank you so much for your help. I appreciate it so much,” she said. “It was just hoop after hoop and not getting anywhere. I thought I’ll just contact you.”

ST. LOUIS – For hours Wednesday morning, airport runways across the U.S. were at a standstill after the Notice To Air Missions (NOTAM) System went down. Inside America’s airports, chaos for travelers.

Dani Murphy’s Southwest Airlines flight from St. Louis to Denver was canceled due to the outage. Thankfully, she was able to rebook with Frontier.

“We were a little frustrated and just a little nervous about whether or not we’d actually be getting out, but we made it happen,” she said.

NOTAM is a non-emergency system that alerts pilots to things like weather issues or closed runways. The backup system is a direct phone call to pilots, impossible to do with thousands of flights each day.

“It’s government technology, so it’s obviously behind the private sector, but this particular system is feeding data points from almost every single airport in the country,” aviation analyst Kyle Bailey said. “Not just large airports, but small airports, too.”

“From the time you book to the time you travel, something is going to change. It just is. It’s the nature of travel,” Christina Royer, CEO of Sky High Travel in St. Louis, said.

“My advice, of course, is always to book with a travel professional, book with a reputable company, and make sure you’re protected with some form of insurance.”

Coverage varies from policy to policy, but Royer says on the heels of Southwest’s holiday meltdown that resulted in thousands of canceled flights, and now Wednesday’s disruptions, getting covered has never made more sense.

“For all those expenses that just kind of get thrown at you, now you’re covered. You’re worry free and if you booked with an advisor, you’re not the person standing there on hold. You’re not the person standing in line, your advisor is doing it for you,” Royer said.

And if Spring Break travel is on your radar, she recommends you act fast.

“I would call now, because the availability is smaller. The price has gone up. The more you wait, it’s going to get worse,” Royer said.

The White House has said there’s no evidence a cyberattack caused the NOTAM System to go down, but the Department of Transportation is investigating.

Loop Trolley Equipment Tested Ahead of Spring Return

ST. LOUIS – The Delmar Loop Trolley continued testing its trolleys on Wednesday, testing brakes and other systems to make sure everything was up to par.

“We’re doing on-the-street testing yesterday, and today, so no customers are involved,” said Taulby Roach, CEO of Bi-State Development. “It’s just safety testing and being sure the equipment runs reliably, and the public can have an expectation that it will run the way it should.”

Bi-State took control of the Loop Trolley at the urging of St. Louis Mayor Tishaura Jones. She feared losing federal dollars for future projects if the area let the trolley fail. The system will resume in the spring and run through October.

Taxpayers paid around $50 million to build the Loop Trolley, with its 2.2 miles of track, through the University City Loop and onto the City of St. Louis to the History Museum.

In its first year, it cost about $2.5 million to run the trolley. $800,000 came from a special Loop Trolley taxing district, and $1.2 million came from a federal grant.

“So our job at Bi-State Development was to look at this asset and try to do the best we could with it. I understand it’s a tough project, it’s no question about that. What we’re doing, we’re in the midst of a two-part plan aimed at making it operate on time and safely,” Roach said.

“We’ve had some early success, as a matter of fact, the first three months, we were pleased to know that we had over 8,000 people on the asset, good news. Not saying it’s not still difficult, it is. But we’re going to run it as best we can.”

Roach said he’s hopeful.
